Too Much Salt? Here’s How to Fix Your Dish!
We’ve all been there, a little too much salt, and suddenly your dish feels ruined. Luckily, you don’t have to throw it out! Here are some practical ways to rescue over-salted food and restore balance.

1. Dilute the Saltiness
For soups, stews, and sauces, add more liquid (like water, broth, or unsalted stock) to reduce the overall salt concentration. Adjust the seasonings afterwards.
2. Add a Starch
Potatoes, rice or pasta can absorb some of the salt while bulking up the dish. Add a few chunks of raw potato to soups or stews and remove them before serving.
3. Use Acid to Balance
Acidic ingredients like vinegar, lemon juice or tomatoes can counteract the saltiness. Add a splash gradually and taste as you go.
4. Sweeten the Dish
A touch of sugar or honey can help neutralise salty flavours, especially in sauces and marinades. Be careful not to overdo it!
5. Add Dairy
Dairy products like cream, yoghurt or sour cream can mellow out the saltiness in creamy dishes, sauces or stews. A dollop can make a big difference.
6. Incorporate Fresh Ingredients
Adding fresh, unsalted vegetables or proteins can help distribute the saltiness and dilute the flavour. Think along the lines of unsalted beans, veggies or meats.
7. Rinse the Excess Salt
If the problem lies with a piece of meat or a vegetable that’s been over-salted, try rinsing it under cold water and then patting it dry.
8. Serve with a Neutral Side
If fixing the dish directly isn’t an option, serve it with a neutral side like plain rice, bread or pasta to balance out the flavour.
9. Mask with Bold Flavours
Sometimes, adding bold flavours like herbs, garlic, or spices can distract from the saltiness. Think fresh herbs or a dash of something tangy.
10. Double the Recipe
If all else fails, make another batch without salt and combine it with the salty batch. This works well for soups, stews, and casseroles.
